Privy vs Klaviyo: how each one bills, what each one does best and when to use both

Privy vs Klaviyo compared for a Shopify store: what each tool starts from, how each one decides what you pay for, whether they work together, and five checks to make before choosing.

Privy vs Klaviyo is a choice between a pop-up and list-growth tool that also sends email and SMS, and a platform built around store data, flows and segments. Decide by what you need first and how each one counts what you pay for, not by feature lists.

This Privy vs Klaviyo guide compares the two for a Shopify store: what each starts from, how each one bills, whether you can run both, and five checks to make before you pay for either. The question usually comes up when a store outgrows basic email, or when a pop-up tool and an email tool start to overlap.

Privy vs Klaviyo: what is the difference?

Privy started with on-site pop-ups and list growth and now sends email and SMS too. Klaviyo starts from your store data and builds flows and segments on top of it. Each can do some of the other’s job, so the difference is where each one is strongest.

Klaviyo’s Shopify integration brings customer profile and order data into Klaviyo. That data feeds its pre-built flows: welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase and winback. Its segments update in close to real time, so a message can target people as they meet a condition.

Privy’s home page describes the opposite starting point: flexible pop-ups, targeting and templates first, then email and SMS campaigns and automations. If your store’s biggest problem is that few visitors join the list, that order matters.

Klaviyo vs Privy decision table: which tool fits pop-ups only, email flows, SMS and one tool for everything

The table above is the short version of Klaviyo vs Privy. The money side differs too: Privy lists $24 a month for pop-ups only and $30 a month for email, as of November 2026, on its pricing page, while Klaviyo’s cost follows your profile count. The Privy vs Klaviyo sections below show how to test both against your own store.

One more difference is who owns the data. In Klaviyo, the order history sits in the same place as the flows that use it. With Privy, the pop-up and the email tool share one login, but the order data comes from your store platform. Neither is wrong; it changes how much of a flow you can personalize with purchase history.

Is Privy free, and what does it cost?

In the Privy vs Klaviyo cost question, Privy lists a 15-day free trial, not a free plan. Its pricing page shows the email plan at $30 a month for 0 to 1,500 mailable contacts, with unlimited email sends and 250 SMS credits at $0 a month. These figures are vendor-listed as of November 2026.

There is also a pop-ups-only plan, listed from $24 a month and priced by monthly page views, with the lowest tier covering up to 10,000, as of November 2026 per the same Privy pricing page. Privy says it has no annual contracts.

Ask Privy how it counts a mailable contact before you assume your list fits a tier, because that definition decides which tier you land on. We could not verify it from the pricing page text. In any Privy vs Klaviyo test, put that answer in writing next to Klaviyo’s rule.

Example (an invented store): it gets 3,000 visits a month and each visit loads 3 pages, so it has about 9,000 page views. That fits the lowest pop-ups tier. At 4 pages a visit it would be 12,000 and would not. Page views, not subscribers, set that fee, so a store that runs a big sale can move up a tier for one month.

How does Klaviyo count what you pay for?

In Privy vs Klaviyo billing, Klaviyo bills on active profiles and on emails sent in the billing cycle. Its billing guide says any profile that can be emailed is active, regardless of consent status, including shoppers who typed an email at checkout without opting in.

Your paid plan has to cover that count. If you pass it, you are moved to a higher tier at the next billing cycle. On the free plan you cannot send until you are back under the limit. After a large cleanup, the count in billing can take up to 72 hours to refresh.

Worked example (an invented store): 1,200 people subscribed and 900 more left an email at checkout without opting in. Klaviyo’s rule counts 2,100 active profiles, not 1,200. Suppressing or deleting the 900 you will never email changes the bill; leaving them does not.

Privy vs Klaviyo billing compared: Privy lists mailable contacts and unlimited email sends, Klaviyo bills on active profiles and emails sent

Because the count rules differ, compare the same store under both before you compare list prices. In a Klaviyo vs Privy cost check, the biggest swing is usually the profiles you never email, not the sends. Klaviyo’s plan prices change, so check its pricing page on the day you decide, and write down the date.

Can you use Privy and Klaviyo together?

Yes, and for some stores that is the cleanest setup, because Privy vs Klaviyo is not always an either-or choice. Privy’s pricing page says contacts collected by its pop-ups sync to your Shopify, BigCommerce or Wix account and to select third-party platforms, including Klaviyo.

A common split: Privy pop-ups collect the sign-ups, Klaviyo runs the welcome series, cart and winback flows. You pay for both, so it only makes sense if the pop-ups clearly grow the list more than Klaviyo’s own forms.

Privy’s 15-day free trial is long enough for that test, as of November 2026 on its pricing page. Before you rely on the pairing, test one sign-up end to end. Check that the contact reaches the right Klaviyo list, that consent status carries across, and that the welcome flow starts once. A flow that fires twice is the usual fault when two tools both add a contact.

Our Shopify Email vs Klaviyo and Brevo vs Klaviyo guides use the same method for two other tools.

Does Privy do SMS, and what rules apply?

Yes. Privy lists SMS campaigns and automations, and its email plan includes 250 SMS credits at $0 a month, which roll over to the next billing period, as of November 2026 on its pricing page. Klaviyo also sends SMS, billed through a separate mobile messaging plan.

Whichever side of Privy vs Klaviyo you pick, the rules are the same. Klaviyo’s SMS compliance guide lists 7 basics, starting with getting consent before you text anyone and making it easy to unsubscribe. Email has its own rule: the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide says you must honor an opt-out within 10 business days, and each violating email can cost up to $53,088.

Neither tool makes you compliant by itself. Set separate consent for email and SMS in the sign-up form, whichever of the two you use. In Privy vs Klaviyo terms, SMS is a cost line to model before you switch it on, not a free extra, and the 250 credits are vendor-listed as of November 2026 on the Privy pricing page.

Which is better for a Shopify store?

Neither wins on every store in the Privy vs Klaviyo comparison. Privy fits a store that mainly needs list growth and a simple email setup at a listed monthly fee. Klaviyo fits a store that wants flows and segments driven by its order data and expects to build more of them over time.

Run these checks in order. Each one narrows the choice, and by check 3 most stores already know which side they lean to. Take the numbers from your own Shopify admin, such as the 30 to 90 days of orders you already have.

Privy vs Klaviyo five checks: list size, count rule, flows, SMS plans and who builds it
  1. Count your list. Add subscribers to shoppers who left an email at checkout. That is your Klaviyo number.
  2. Ask how each tool counts. Compare the same store under both rules, as in the example above.
  3. List the 4 flows you want live first. Welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase and winback are the usual four. If you need little beyond them, a simpler tool may do.
  4. Decide on SMS. If you will text customers, plan consent and quiet hours before you pick a tool.
  5. Decide who builds it. Setup takes time whichever tool you choose. If nobody on your team has it, budget for help.

How do you move from Privy to Klaviyo?

For a Privy vs Klaviyo switch, export your subscribers with their consent status, import them into Klaviyo with unsubscribes included, rebuild your flows and forms, then switch off the old ones. Klaviyo’s guide to migrating subscribers and unsubscribes covers the import step.

Here’s the timing we publish for our own Klaviyo migration work: the audit as a PDF within 2 workdays, and most store migrations taking 2 to 4 weeks. We advise finishing 2 to 3 weeks before a major sale so flows and forms have run on real orders first.

The Privy vs Klaviyo switch does not have to be all at once. Keep Privy’s pop-ups running during the move if you plan to keep using them. Only the email side needs to switch. If you want a second opinion on your current setup first, our free audit reviews it and sends the findings in writing. More comparisons are in buying guides.
