Shopify development · Migrations

Shopify migration with the SEO built into the plan.

Most migrations move the products and forget what made the old store work in search and ads: its URLs, links and tracking. Our Shopify migration services move your store from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Wix or Squarespace with URL mapping, 301 redirects, rebuilt tracking and rankings watched after launch. A migration is an SEO project as much as a development one.

The challenge

An antique jewelry store selling to US buyers, a client since November 2021, had to move from Wix to Shopify without losing the search visibility of unique pieces that buyers find by era, stone, metal or item, and without breaking the order history behind its reporting.

What we did

  • Shopify migration launched on September 17, 2024, on the same domain: 642 product pages, 74 collections, 218 editorial pages and 34 service and information pages into 968 canonical URLs, keeping product identifiers, item descriptions, image references, metadata and useful customer records.
  • A reviewed inventory of 1,126 old paths: 1,082 permanent redirects mapped directly and 44 retired routes with no equivalent, with no blanket redirects to the homepage. Internal links, canonicals, structured data and sitemaps changed together.
  • Tracking rebuilt on the same order identifiers (Google purchase action, GA4, Meta Pixel and Conversions API) and checked before and after launch. Historical Wix orders stayed in the reporting archive, so Shopify sales never duplicate them.

Results

  • Organic clicks in separate 28-day windows: 3,186 before launch (Aug 20–Sep 16, 2024), 3,094 after (Sep 18–Oct 15, 2.89% lower), then 3,372 (Oct 16–Nov 12, 2024).
  • Paid online orders 7 → 15 and net merchandise sales $90,259.70 → $226,447.44 in the first two windows; changing inventory and ongoing marketing also shape those sales.
  • Later, Search Console clicks went 4,283 → 118,763 (28 days, Sep 20–Oct 17, 2025 vs 2026), and online net merchandise sales reached $18,444,401.31 across Wix and Shopify, November 2021–September 2026.

Data source

Google Search Console (Performance report, web search), Ahrefs Rank Tracker, Google Ads and Meta Ads Manager campaign reports, Shopify Analytics and the store’s order ledger across Wix and Shopify. Money in USD; ROAS is attributed merchandise value divided by ad spend, not profit.

What’s next

Ongoing SEO, Meta Ads and Google Ads work; the engagement continues.

The continuity windows are observed comparisons, not a controlled test, and the 2025 vs 2026 Search Console windows show the later continuation, not the cutover.

Fit

Who it’s for

  • Stores moving to Shopify from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace or a custom platform
  • Brands with organic traffic and rankings they can’t afford to lose
  • Stores with years of product, customer and order history to bring across
  • Teams that want ads and analytics working on launch day, not weeks later

Problems we fix

How migrations lose rankings.

  • 01

    No URL map

Shopify uses fixed paths like /products/ and /collections/. Without a map from every old URL to its new home, links and rankings point at 404 pages.

  • 02

    Redirects only for the homepage

Pointing everything to the homepage tells search engines the old pages are gone, and visitors land somewhere unrelated.

  • 03

    Content left behind

Category descriptions, blog posts and product copy that ranked aren’t moved, or are moved without their headings and links.

  • 04

    Tracking forgotten

GA4, Meta and Google Ads purchase tracking isn’t rebuilt before launch, so ads lose their conversion signal on the day traffic is most unsettled.

  • 05

    Customer accounts and orders mishandled

Customers can’t log in, order history is missing, and gift card or subscription data doesn’t come across.

  • 06

    Nobody watching after launch

Crawl errors, missed redirects and ranking drops go unnoticed for weeks after go-live.

  1. What we check first in a Shopify migration Five checks that protect rankings and sales.
  2. 1. Is every old URL mapped? Shopify uses fixed paths like /products/ and /collections/. Every old URL needs a new home, or links and rankings hit 404s. (Example store before migration.)
  3. 2. Do redirects go to the right page? Pointing everything to the homepage tells search engines the old pages are gone. (Example redirect map.)
  4. 3. Did the ranking content come across? Category descriptions, blog posts and product copy that ranked need moving, with their headings and links. (Example store.)
  5. 4. Is tracking rebuilt before launch? If purchase tracking isn’t ready, ads lose their signal on the day traffic is most unsettled. (Example launch checklist.)
  6. 5. Who watches after launch? Crawl errors, missed redirects and ranking drops go unnoticed for weeks unless someone checks daily.
  7. Then we fix them, in that order. Want this checked on your migration? The free growth audit covers all five, in writing.

Our approach

A Shopify migration in five steps.

Google’s guide to site moves with URL changes is the backbone of our plan: map old URLs to new ones, set up permanent 301 redirects, update internal links, and monitor crawling and indexing after the move. A platform migration almost always changes URLs, because Shopify’s paths are fixed, so this applies to nearly every store.

Step one is the inventory. We crawl the old store, export every URL that has traffic, links or rankings, and record its current performance from Search Console and analytics. That becomes the baseline we compare against after launch.

Step two is the map and the data. Every old URL gets a new destination: product to product, category to collection, post to post, with retired pages pointed at the closest equivalent rather than the homepage. Products, customers and orders move with Shopify’s migration tools or a migration app, and we check the result record by record for the products that matter.

Step three is rebuilding what made the old store work: page titles, meta descriptions, headings, category copy, image alt text, structured data and internal links. We also rebuild tracking on Shopify’s customer events before launch, so GA4 and the ad platforms receive purchases from the first order.

Step four is launch. Redirects go live in Shopify’s URL redirects at the moment of the switch, the sitemap is submitted, and if the domain changes, Search Console’s Change of Address tool is used. We test the top URLs by hand and the full list by script.

Customer accounts need a plan. Passwords can’t move between platforms, so we prepare the account activation emails and timing with you, and make sure order history, addresses and marketing consent come across so returning customers recognize their account.

Apps and features are rebuilt, not assumed. Reviews, wishlists, subscriptions, product options and search usually run on different apps on Shopify. We list what the old store did, pick the Shopify equivalent for each and move the data where the apps allow, before the switch rather than after.

Step five is monitoring. For the weeks after launch we watch crawl errors, the Page indexing report, rankings and organic revenue against the baseline, and fix missed redirects and gaps as they appear. Some movement in rankings during a migration is normal; the aim is to keep it small and short.

This is work we’ve done, not just planned. Kashif moved a high-ticket antique jewelry store in the US from Wix to Shopify and runs its SEO, Meta Ads and Google Ads, so the Shopify migration plan here comes from a store that had rankings and sales to protect. One-of-a-kind pieces made the URL map the delicate part: sold items that still attract searches and links keep a sensible destination instead of a 404.

How we use AI here

How we use AI in a Shopify migration.

A migration involves thousands of URLs and product records. AI handles the volume; people check what matters.

  • URL mapping

AI-assisted matching pairs old URLs with new products and collections by title and attributes, so every redirect has a sensible destination. A person reviews the doubtful matches.

  • Data clean-up

Product titles, descriptions and attributes are tidied in bulk during the move, instead of copying old problems across.

  • Launch checks

Scripts test every redirect and compare old and new pages for titles, structured data and tracking.

Where it doesn’t help: judging what to keep. Which pages carry rankings and links, and which can go, is decided from Search Console and link data by a person.

What’s included

Deliverables, not promises.

  • URL inventory and baseline

Every old URL with traffic, links or rankings, and its performance before the move.

  • URL map and 301 redirects

Each old URL mapped to its closest new page, imported into Shopify’s URL redirects and tested.

  • Data migration

Products with variants and images, customers, orders, and pages and blog posts, checked after import.

  • SEO rebuilt on Shopify

Titles, descriptions, headings, category content, alt text, structured data and internal links carried across.

  • Theme setup

Your chosen theme set up and customized to match the brand and the old store’s key features.

  • Tracking rebuilt before launch

GA4 and ad platform purchase events on Shopify’s customer events, tested with real orders.

  • Launch-day checklist

Redirects live, sitemap submitted, Search Console updated and top pages tested by hand.

  • Post-launch monitoring

Crawl errors, indexing, rankings and organic revenue watched against the baseline, with fixes as needed.

What moves, and what gets rebuilt.

How we run it

Five steps, in this order.

The URL map is finished before a single product moves. Typical timing: the inventory and redirect map in the first week, the move in 2 to 4 weeks depending on the size of the store, and close monitoring for 4 weeks after launch.

  1. Step 1

    Inventory

Crawl the old store, record every URL that matters and its current performance.

  2. Step 2

    Map and migrate

Old URLs mapped to new ones; products, customers and orders moved and checked.

  3. Step 3

    Rebuild

SEO content, structured data, theme and tracking set up on Shopify.

  4. Step 4

    Launch

Redirects live at switch-over, sitemap submitted, top pages tested.

  5. Step 5

    Monitor

Indexing, rankings and revenue compared with the baseline, and gaps fixed.

By industry

What changes for your category.

  • Jewelry

Jewelry stores often have many variant and tag pages. We map the ones that rank, consolidate the duplicates and carry across product details like metal, stone and size.

  • Fashion & apparel

Fashion catalogs bring many retired products. We redirect them to the closest category or replacement, and keep seasonal collection URLs stable on Shopify.

  • Luxury & high-ticket

High-ticket stores often rank for individual pieces. We map every item URL with care, including sold pieces that still attract links and searches.

Straight answers.

Will we lose rankings when we migrate to Shopify?

Some short-term movement is common in any migration. A complete URL map, 301 redirects, content carried across and close monitoring keep it small and temporary. Nobody can promise zero change.

Which platforms can you migrate from?

WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace and most custom platforms that can export products, customers and orders.

Do customers need to create new passwords?

Usually yes. Passwords can’t be transferred between platforms for security reasons, so customers are invited to activate their accounts on Shopify.

Can we keep our domain?

Yes. Most migrations keep the same domain, which is simpler for SEO. If it changes, we use Search Console’s Change of Address tool as well as redirects.

How long does a migration take?

It depends on the catalog size, the amount of content and the custom features to rebuild. We give you a timeline after the inventory step.

What about our blog posts and pages?

They move too, with their headings, links and images, and their old URLs are redirected to the new ones.

Can our reviews come with us?

Usually, yes. Most review apps can import reviews exported from the old platform, matched to products by SKU or handle. We check the import against the old store before launch.

Do you migrate away from Shopify?

No. We help stores move to Shopify. For WooCommerce stores staying on WordPress, see our WooCommerce service.
