Texts your customers signed up for, sent when they help.

We set up ecommerce SMS marketing for Shopify and WooCommerce stores that want texts to add sales without adding complaints. You get compliant consent collection, a registered sending number, quiet hours and a short list of flows and campaigns, built in Klaviyo or the SMS tool you use.

Ecommerce SMS marketing, worked through one campaign.

A worked example, with illustrative figures for a hypothetical US pet-accessories Shopify store (not a client result). It shows how we read one SMS campaign, from attempted sends to attributed orders, and the limits of what the numbers mean.

Worked example

One VIP SMS campaign, from send to attributed orders

Worked example, with illustrative figures for a hypothetical US pet-accessories Shopify store (not a client result).

In this worked example, a single SMS campaign for a hypothetical US pet-accessories Shopify store records $14,672.31 in attributed revenue from 147 orders. Of 12,328 delivered messages, 1,504 recipients click, producing a 12.20% click rate. The campaign’s unsubscribe rate is 0.41%, based on 51 unique opt-outs. All displayed figures use this one campaign and its own recipient records.

The campaign, “Fall essentials | VIP SMS”, is one promotional text sent on September 18, 2026 at 10:00 AM EDT (the account’s time zone) to opted-in VIP SMS subscribers who recently engaged or purchased. It offers a seasonal edit of premium pet essentials through one tracked link to a product collection, with a recognizable sender prefix and an opt-out instruction. Smart Sending holds back recipients who recently received a text. No reminder, second send, resend, email revenue, MMS or RCS activity is included.

The aim is a timely offer to an engaged list. It is not a claim that a whole subscriber base converts at this rate.

  • $14,672.31 Attributed revenue, one campaign
  • 12.20% Click rate (1,504 of 12,328 delivered)
  • 0.41% Unsubscribe rate (51 opt-outs)

Fall essentials | VIP SMS · sent September 18, 2026 · report snapshot October 24, 2026 · USD · one campaign, not an account-wide monthly total · illustrative figures, not a live client export.

How the figures in this ecommerce SMS marketing example are measured

Every record in the example is an SMS record. The email cases elsewhere on this site are separate and contribute no figures here. The conversion metric is Shopify Placed Order, in USD. A custom 24-hour click window is used, with delivery-based attribution turned off and SMS bot clicks excluded. That is a setting chosen for this case, not a claim about the platform default. Each credited order follows an eligible SMS click within 24 hours, with one campaign credit per order.

The records hold no competing email or campaign attribution, so they do not replace a live cross-channel attribution audit. SMS has no open rate metric, and email-only fields such as opens, bounces and spam complaints are left out.

Attributed revenue here is not store-wide turnover, refund-adjusted net revenue, profit or measured incremental lift. Message-segment counts, carrier fees, SMS spend and return on spend are not worked out from the send counts.

The example does not establish subscriber addresses, SMS consent records or how quiet hours were applied in a live account.

Sent is attempted minus Smart Sending skips (12,640 minus 160 = 12,480), and delivered plus failed equals sent. Click, order and unsubscribe rates use delivered messages as the base.

For context only: Klaviyo’s broad US SMS/MMS campaign benchmark guidance puts click rates of 8.9–14.5%, conversion rates of 1.0–2.0% and revenue per recipient of $0.66–$2.41 in its Good ranges, and unsubscribe rates below 0.5% in its Great range. These example figures sit within those general bands. Industry, audience, attribution settings and account-specific benchmark eligibility all affect comparisons. No percentile, promised result or platform-awarded performance badge is claimed.

What we can show today

What we have, and what is still to come.

Kashif works in Klaviyo and Mailchimp on client stores, and our Klaviyo email marketing service sets up the same consent and quiet hour rules this page describes. Every SMS setup is checked against Klaviyo’s help articles on SMS consent collection and US cart abandonment by SMS, read on 19 October 2026, and the work is logged so you can see what was set and when.

What we check

Six rules every SMS program needs first.

SMS is more regulated than email. These six come before any message that sells.

  • 01

    Separate consent

SMS opt-in on its own checkbox or step, clearly optional, never bundled with email or required to buy.

  • 02

    Disclosure text

What people sign up for, how often and how to stop, placed above the SMS checkbox or button.

  • 03

    Sending number

A toll-free, short code or local number registered or verified for each country you text.

  • 04

    Quiet hours

No texts between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. in the recipient’s time, stricter where state law requires it.

  • 05

    Double opt-in for cart flows

A US carrier requirement for abandoned cart and added to cart texts.

  • 06

    Opt-out handling

STOP and HELP replies working, and unsubscribes synced to every tool you use.

  1. What we check first in store SMS Five checks on consent and timing before any text that sells.
  2. 1. Is SMS consent separate? SMS opt-in needs its own checkbox or step, clearly optional, never bundled with email or required to buy. (Example checkout.)
  3. 2. Does the form say what people get? What they sign up for, how often, that rates may apply and how to stop, shown before they agree. (Example sign-up form.)
  4. 3. Do texts land in quiet hours? We check send times against the recipient’s time zone: no texts between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m., stricter where state law requires it. (Example account: one time zone used for every subscriber.)
  5. 4. Does STOP really stop everything? Unsubscribes in one tool that never reach the others mean texts keep coming.
  6. 5. Which flows earn their texts? Each text costs money, so we compare revenue per message across flows before adding more. (Example account.)
  7. Then we fix them, in that order. Want this checked on your SMS program? The free growth audit covers all five, in writing.

How we work

How our ecommerce SMS marketing is set up and run.

Ecommerce SMS marketing starts with consent, because a text without it is a legal risk, not a sale. Klaviyo’s guide to SMS consent collection sets the rules we build to: people must agree to texts specifically, SMS consent must be collected separately from email, it must never look required to buy, and a phone number on an order is not consent. Bought or shared lists don’t count either. We add a separate SMS step to your forms and an optional SMS checkbox at checkout, with disclosure text above it.

Next is the sending number. Klaviyo needs an active sending number in each country before it can collect SMS consent, and in the US a toll-free number has to be verified; Klaviyo’s page on SMS sending numbers compares the types. Klaviyo’s page on toll-free verification also warns that carriers expect a verified number to start sending soon, and a pause of several weeks can put it back to unverified. So we time the verification with the launch of the first flows, not weeks before.

Then quiet hours. Klaviyo recommends not sending between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. in the recipient’s local time, with stricter rules in some US states, and notes that flows judge local time by the phone number’s area code. We set quiet hours on the account, check the time zone rule for flows and campaigns, and schedule campaigns for the late morning or early evening in the main time zone of your customers.

Flows come before campaigns, because they reach people at the moment a text helps. For abandoned cart texts, Klaviyo’s page on US cart abandonment guidelines lists what the TCPA, CTIA and carriers require: double opt-in, one SMS per recipient in the flow, sent within 48 hours of the trigger, with express consent and disclosures in your terms and privacy policy. Klaviyo’s double opt-in process handles the confirmation text. We build that flow to the letter, then add shipping updates, back in stock alerts and a welcome text where they fit your store.

Campaigns are fewer than most stores expect. Email can carry the weekly newsletter; text message marketing works best for things with a deadline, such as a launch, a restock of a sold-out bestseller or the last day of a sale. We plan two to four SMS campaigns a month for most stores, send them to engaged segments rather than the whole list, and keep every text short, with the brand name first and a clear opt-out.

Last, we judge SMS on what it adds. Each message is compared with the same message by email, and the report shows revenue, clicks and unsubscribes per text. If SMS isn’t earning its cost for a segment, we stop sending to that segment. Most of the value sits in a few flows, so a short, well-run program usually beats a busy one.

Fit

Who it’s for

  • Stores with a healthy email program that want SMS to add sales, not noise
  • Stores already texting that aren’t sure their consent and cart flows are compliant
  • Brands with launches, restocks or limited drops where speed matters
  • Shopify and WooCommerce stores using Klaviyo or a similar SMS tool

Not the right fit if you want to text a list you bought, exported from another business or collected without SMS consent. Those numbers can’t be texted, and we won’t send to them.

FAQ

Straight answers.

Can’t find yours? Ask on WhatsApp or by email and we’ll answer it.

Is SMS marketing worth it for an online store?

For most stores with an active email list, yes, in small doses. Texts suit time-sensitive messages like cart reminders, restocks and launches; weekly newsletters belong in email.

Can I text customers who gave their phone number at checkout?

Not for marketing unless they also opted in to SMS. A phone number on an order is not SMS consent, and email consent doesn’t count either.

What are SMS quiet hours?

Hours when marketing texts shouldn’t be sent. Klaviyo recommends no texts between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. in the recipient’s local time, and some US states set stricter windows.

Do I need double opt-in for SMS?

For US abandoned cart texts, yes: carriers require it. For other messages it is recommended, because it confirms the number and the consent in one step.

How many marketing texts should a store send a month?

Most stores do well with two to four SMS campaigns a month plus a few flows. More than that tends to raise unsubscribes faster than sales.

Can I use SMS and email in the same sign-up form?

Yes, if SMS consent is a separate, optional step or checkbox. A multi-step form that asks for email first and phone second is the cleanest way.
