Web development · Custom WordPress

Custom WordPress, built like software.

Our custom WordPress development is for sites that need more than a theme and a page builder. We build themes from scratch, custom plugins and editor blocks, custom post types and fields, REST API integrations and headless WordPress, around an editor your team enjoys using. The website you are reading is one of these builds: a custom theme with its own editor blocks and a custom plugin, written by us with AI-assisted development.

Free WordPress audit

We’ll check your WordPress build and what it needs to do and send a PDF report within 2 workdays.

Three fields and you’re done. The PDF report shows what we found on your own pages and accounts, and the order we’d fix it in. It covers the problems we see most often:

  • Logic in the theme
  • Unsafe custom code
  • Fields everywhere, no model

Fit

Who it’s for

  • Businesses whose content doesn’t fit posts and pages: doctors, courses, properties, products, locations
  • Teams that want an editor with their own blocks and patterns instead of a page builder
  • Sites that need a feature no plugin does well, or a cluster of plugins replaced by one small custom plugin
  • Projects that want WordPress for content and a separate frontend in Next.js or React

Not the right fit when a good theme and a few well-maintained plugins would do the job. For changes to an existing theme or page builder site, see our WordPress development page.

Problems we fix

Why custom WordPress builds become a burden.

  • 01

    Logic in the theme

Business features written into theme files, so changing the design means losing features.

  • 02

    Unsafe custom code

Forms and settings that don’t validate input, check permissions or escape output, the basics WordPress asks every developer to follow.

  • 03

    Fields everywhere, no model

Dozens of custom fields added one at a time, with no plan, so templates fill up with special cases.

  • 04

    An editor nobody understands

Custom layouts that only the original developer can edit without breaking something.

  • 05

    Headless for the wrong reasons

A separate frontend built because it sounded modern, which now needs two codebases maintained for one site.

  • 06

    No tests or documentation

Custom code that works today and nobody dares to touch after the developer leaves.

Read the transcript
  1. What we check first in a custom WordPress build Five checks on the code that will outlive its developer.
  2. 1. Is business logic in the theme? Features written into theme files disappear when the design changes. They belong in a plugin. (Example site.)
  3. 2. Does the custom code follow WordPress basics? The WordPress developer handbook asks for three things on every input and output: sanitize, check permissions, escape. (Example form handler. Source: WordPress Plugin Handbook, security.)
  4. 3. Is there a content model? Fields added one at a time, with no plan, fill templates with special cases. (Example site.)
  5. 4. Can editors work without the developer? Custom blocks with locked layouts let editors change words and images without breaking pages.
  6. 5. Could the next developer take over? Custom code without notes or tests is code nobody dares to touch after the author leaves. (Example site.)
  7. Then we fix them, in that order. Want this checked on your site? The free growth audit covers all five, in writing.

Our approach

Custom WordPress development in five kinds of build.

Build one is a theme from scratch. We build block themes with templates, patterns and a theme.json design system, or classic and hybrid themes where a project needs them, following the Theme Handbook. The theme handles presentation; features live in plugins, so a future redesign doesn’t remove anything your business depends on. Templates are built for speed from the start: no page builder, no unused scripts, images sized properly.

Build two is custom plugins. A custom plugin keeps business logic in one place, with its own settings, permissions and updates. WordPress’s security guidelines are the checklist: never trust input, validate and sanitize it, check the user’s permissions, use nonces on forms and escape everything on output. Our plugins follow those rules and use WordPress’s own APIs instead of reinventing them.

Build three is the content model. Custom post types and taxonomies give each kind of content its own place: a doctor, a course, a property, a location, a case study. Fields hold the details, either registered in code or with Advanced Custom Fields when your team wants to manage them in the dashboard. We plan the model first, on paper, so templates stay simple and editors fill in a form instead of designing a page.

Build four is editor blocks. Custom blocks give your team building pieces that match your design, with only the options they need. Blocks can be written in React on WordPress’s block API, or built as ACF blocks in PHP where that is simpler to maintain. This site’s own editor uses custom blocks for every section: hero, cards, steps, figures, pricing and FAQ, each with fields an editor can fill in and nothing that can break the layout.

Build five is integrations and headless WordPress. The WordPress REST API lets other systems read and write your content as JSON, which is how we connect WordPress to CRMs, booking systems and internal tools, and how a separate frontend can use WordPress as its content source. Headless WordPress makes sense when a Next.js or React frontend is needed for other reasons; it doubles what has to be maintained, so we recommend it only when that cost buys something real.

The proof is on this page. The Above Clicks website is a custom WordPress theme and a custom plugin we built and run: custom post types for glossary terms and free tools, our own blocks in the editor, REST endpoints for a content pipeline that checks every page before it is published, server-side conversion tracking, and lead forms with spam protection. It was built with AI-assisted development and reviewed, tested and documented change by change, which is exactly how we would build yours.

AI-assisted development is what makes custom WordPress affordable for smaller businesses. Drafting a block, a settings screen or a REST endpoint is much faster with AI coding tools, so more of the budget goes into planning, testing and documentation. A developer still decides the structure, reads every line and owns the result.

Every custom build ships with what makes it maintainable: code in version control, a staging site, automated checks for the parts that matter, notes in the code where something isn’t obvious, and a handover document. Custom WordPress shouldn’t mean you depend on one person forever. Speed is judged against Google’s Core Web Vitals thresholds: main content within 2.5 seconds, a response to input within 200 milliseconds and layout shift of 0.1 or less.

How we use AI here

Where AI helps on custom WordPress (and where it doesn’t).

  • Blocks and settings screens

Repetitive code, such as block attributes, field registration and admin screens, drafted in minutes and then reviewed.

  • Security reviews

AI tools flag missing sanitization, escaping or permission checks as a second pair of eyes, on top of a developer’s review.

  • Documentation

Handover notes and code comments kept current, because writing them no longer takes a day.

Where it doesn’t: the content model, the security model and the decision to go headless are made by a person who understands your business. Code that handles logins, payments or personal data gets a line-by-line human review, and customer data never goes into an AI tool.

What’s included

What a custom WordPress build includes.

  • Content model plan

Post types, taxonomies and fields mapped on paper before any code.

  • Custom theme

A block, classic or hybrid theme built for your design, fast from the first template.

  • Custom plugin

Business features in a plugin of their own, with settings, permissions and security checks.

  • Editor blocks

Blocks and patterns that match your design, with only the options editors need.

  • Fields and post types

Registered in code or with Advanced Custom Fields, documented for editors.

  • Integrations

REST API connections to CRMs, booking systems and internal tools, with error alerts.

  • Headless option

WordPress as the content source for a Next.js or React frontend, when it’s worth it.

  • Handover

Version control, staging, documentation and a walkthrough for your team.

How we run it

Four steps, in this order.

The content model is planned before anything is built. Typical timing: the scope within 2 workdays, the build in 2 to 4 weeks depending on size, then testing, launch and handover in the final week.

  1. Step 1

    Model

Your content, editors and integrations mapped into post types, fields and blocks.

  2. Step 2

    Build

Theme, plugin and blocks built on staging, in version control, reviewed change by change.

  3. Step 3

    Test

Security checks, editor testing with your team, speed and tracking checks.

  4. Step 4

    Launch and document

Content migrated, redirects in place, documentation and training handed over.

FAQ

Straight answers.

Can’t find yours? Ask on WhatsApp or by email and we’ll answer it.

What is custom WordPress development?

Building the parts of a WordPress site that no theme or plugin provides: a theme from scratch, custom plugins and blocks, custom post types and fields, integrations, or a headless setup.

Should we build a custom theme or use an existing one?

If a well-built theme fits your design and content, use it. A custom theme pays off when your content model is specific, speed matters a lot, or page builder layouts have become hard to manage.

Do you use Advanced Custom Fields?

Yes, when your team wants to manage fields in the dashboard. For fields that rarely change we often register them in code. Both are documented.

What is headless WordPress?

WordPress used only as the content backend, with a separate frontend, often in Next.js, reading content through the REST API. It suits some projects, but it means maintaining two codebases.

Is custom code secure?

It is when it follows WordPress’s security rules: validate and sanitize input, check permissions, use nonces and escape output. We review every change against them.

Can our team edit a custom WordPress site?

Yes. That is the point of custom blocks, post types and fields: editors fill in forms and pick blocks, without touching code or layouts.

Who owns the custom theme and plugin?

You do. The code is yours, in your repository, with documentation another developer can follow.

How do you use AI when building custom WordPress?

AI tools draft repetitive code and documentation. A developer plans the structure, reviews every line, tests it and owns the result.

Can you add custom features to our existing site?

Usually, yes. We often add a custom plugin to an existing WordPress site to replace several plugins or add a feature, without rebuilding the theme.
