Average price of SEO: how the number is built, what it leaves out and how to test a quote against it

What the average price of SEO is in 2026, why the same quotes can produce three different averages, what an average leaves out, and a checklist for putting a real quote next to it.

The average price of SEO is a range, not one number: monthly retainers run $1,000 to $5,000 as of October 2026, according to WebFX. Which figure applies to you depends on how the average was built, so this guide shows the method before the numbers.

You will see three things here: the published ranges by pricing model and business size, a worked example in which the same quotes give three different averages, and a checklist for putting a real quote next to any average you read.

What is the average price of SEO?

A range that depends on the pricing model: $1,000 to $5,000 for a monthly retainer, $75 to $200 an hour for advice and $500 to $5,000 for a project, as of October 2026, according to WebFX.

Average price of SEO by pricing model in 2026: monthly retainer, hourly, project and freelancer ranges and what each is best for

The same WebFX page gives a single headline figure of about $2,500 a month for most businesses, as of October 2026. That is a midpoint of a range where the top is 5 times the bottom, so it tells you where quotes cluster, not what your site needs.

Every source defines its average differently: some count only agencies, some blend freelancers and consultants, some use survey bands. We use one dated 2026 source here so the figures can be checked in one place. For a second set of figures by provider type, see our guide to SEO price.

Treat the average price of SEO as a sanity check, not a budget. If a quote is far outside the range, ask why. If it sits inside the range, you still have to check what the fee covers, because two quotes of $2,500 can describe very different work.

What is the average SEO cost per month?

For a retainer, $1,000 to $5,000 a month as of October 2026, according to WebFX, which also lists freelancers at about $1,400 a month. The average SEO cost per month matters less than the hours behind it, because the same fee can buy a senior specialist for a few hours or a junior for many more.

Divide the fee by the hourly rate to see what a retainer buys. At WebFX’s hourly range of $75 to $200, a $1,000 retainer covers about 5 to 13 hours of work. Five hours is a few fixes and a report. Thirteen hours starts to include content.

Three questions turn any monthly figure into something you can use:

  1. How many hours, or how many named deliverables, does the fee cover each month?
  2. Who does those hours: a senior person, a junior, or a freelancer?
  3. What is excluded from the fee, such as writing, tools and set-up?

The first month often costs more than the rest, because the audit and clean-up land there; compare quotes over 3 months, not 1. Our guide to a monthly SEO package shows what each quarter of a retainer should deliver.

What is the average cost of SEO for a small business?

About $1,500 to $3,500 a month as of October 2026, according to WebFX, with startups lower and larger firms much higher.

Business sizeMonthly range, as of October 2026
Startup or micro-enterprise$500 to $1,500
Small business$1,500 to $3,500
Mid-sized business$1,500 to $10,000
Large business$5,000 to $20,000
Enterprise$10,000 to $50,000+

Notice the overlap. Small and mid-sized businesses both start at $1,500, so size alone does not set the fee: the number of pages, the competition and the work in scope do. That is why two shops of the same size can get quotes 2 times apart.

Google also points out that a small local business can probably do much of the work itself, and recommends starting with its SEO starter guide. If you do some tasks yourself, the average cost of SEO for your site drops, because you pay only for the parts you cannot do.

How is the average price of SEO worked out?

By collecting what providers say they charge, then picking a rule to turn the answers into one figure. The rule changes the result by a quarter or more.

Ahrefs’ provider survey, updated in August 2024, asked for price bands and then assumed each provider charges the top of its band, for example $1,500 for the band $1,001 to $1,500. That is a sound way to be consistent, but it pushes the average up. We cite its method here, not its dollar figures, because they are over two years old.

Here is a worked example with 10 hypothetical providers and their monthly retainer bands:

BandProvidersTop of bandMiddle of band
$501 to $1,0004$1,000$750
$1,001 to $2,0003$2,000$1,500
$2,001 to $5,0002$5,000$3,500
$5,001 to $10,0001$10,000$7,500
Worked example of the average price of SEO: the same 10 hypothetical quotes give $3,000, $2,200 or $1,500 depending on how the average is built

Using the top of each band, the average is $3,000. Using the middle of each band, it is $2,200. The median provider, the fifth and sixth of the 10, sits in the $1,001 to $2,000 band, about $1,500 at its middle. One set of 10 quotes, three honest averages, and the highest is 2 times the lowest.

This is why the average price of SEO in one article can differ from the average price of SEO in another, even when both are honest. So when you read an average, ask three things: was it the mean or the median, were bands or exact quotes used, and who was counted. A survey of providers shows what they say they charge, not what buyers actually pay.

What do average SEO prices include and leave out?

They blur scope. Google lists 8 kinds of service that SEOs offer, from content and structure review to keyword research, training and optimizing for generative AI, and an average mixes all of them.

Google’s guide to hiring an SEO also makes one point that no pricing average can: Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in organic results, and it costs $0 to appear in them. What you pay for is expertise and time.

Averages usually leave out things that change your real monthly total:

  • Content: new pages or rewrites are often billed apart from the retainer.
  • Tools: software subscriptions may be passed on to you.
  • Set-up: the first audit and clean-up can be a separate project, as in our guide to a one-time SEO package.
  • Developer time: fixes on your own site may need your developer, not the agency.

When you compare average SEO prices with a quote, add these to the quote, not to the average. Likewise, the average price for SEO services in a ranking article rarely says which of these it includes, so ask the provider to list them. Our guide to SEO audit cost covers the first of them.

How do you compare your quote with the average price of SEO?

Convert it to hours and deliverables first, then check where it sits in the range for your business size. A quote below the average price of SEO is not automatically a bargain, and one above it is not automatically bad.

Average price of SEO quote checklist: hours, deliverables, who does the work, exclusions, access and ranking promises

Many owners start from the average and work backwards to a budget. It is safer to work the other way: decide what the site needs, get two or three quotes that list their work, and only then use the average cost of SEO to see whether any quote is an outlier.

Work through it in this order:

  1. Hours: divide the monthly fee by the hourly rate, as above.
  2. Scope: list what is delivered each month, and what is excluded.
  3. Range: place the fee in the band for your size. If it is outside, ask why in writing.
  4. 12-month total: multiply by 12. The retainer range of $1,000 to $5,000 means $12,000 to $60,000 over a year, which is the sum you are really agreeing to.

Google’s hiring advice adds practical checks: ask what results to expect and in what timeframe, ask for references, and if an SEO offers an audit, grant read access to Search Console only, not write access. Our free audit works that way. If your own team can do the writing, our SEO consulting page lists starting price cards for planning and review.

When should you ignore the average price of SEO?

When a quote promises a number-one ranking, or a result by a fixed date. Google says that no one can promise a number-one ranking, and advises you to find someone else if an SEO offers one.

Timing is the second reason to distrust a tidy number. Google’s helpful-content guide says some changes take effect in a few days, while it could take several months for its systems to confirm that a site is helpful. WebFX puts meaningful results at 3 to 6 months, as of October 2026.

That means the average cost of SEO per month is only half the sum. A 6-month trial at the low end of the range is a very different commitment from a 12-month contract at the top. Judge a quote by what it commits you to, what it delivers and what you own when it ends, and use the average only to check that the fee is in a sensible place.

A simple rule helps here. Write down the average price of SEO for your business size, your quote, and the number of hours and deliverables behind the quote. If you cannot fill in the last two, the first two do not mean much yet. Ask the provider to fill them in, and do not sign until they have.

FAQ

Questions we get.

Can’t find yours? Ask on WhatsApp or by email and we’ll answer it.

Is the average price of SEO what I will pay?

Not usually. It is a midpoint across very different jobs, so your site's size, market and the work in scope matter more. Use it to spot a quote that is far outside the range and ask why, not to set your budget.

Does Google charge for SEO?

No. Google says it never accepts money to include or rank sites in organic results, and appearing in them costs nothing. What you pay for is the work of a person or agency, or your own time.

Should I choose a retainer or a project?

A project fits work with a finish line, such as an audit or a migration. A retainer fits ongoing page and content work. If you are unsure, start with a project and move to monthly work once you know what the site needs.

Is very cheap SEO worth it?

It can be for a narrow, well-defined job. A very low monthly fee usually buys few hours, so check what those hours cover before you compare it with a higher quote.
