Digital marketing monthly packages: what a month should deliver, how to compare quotes and the traps to avoid

What digital marketing monthly packages include, the three bills behind one fee, a worked comparison of two quotes by delivered items, a 90-day plan you can check and the account rules that decide what leaving costs.

Digital marketing monthly packages are fixed monthly bundles of channel work, such as ads, search, email and reporting, sold at one fee. Judge one by what it delivers each month, not by its tier name.

This guide to digital marketing monthly packages shows what a month should contain, what three bills sit behind one fee, how to compare two quotes by delivered items and which accounts you should own.

What are digital marketing monthly packages?

A repeating agreement where one agency does an agreed list of work across two or more channels every month. The channels are usually paid ads, search optimization, email and reporting.

The appeal is one team, one report and one invoice. The risk with digital marketing monthly packages is a bundle that sounds broad and delivers little in any channel. Google’s own page on hiring an SEO warns that no one can promise a #1 ranking, and it says you are responsible for the actions of any company you hire. The same holds for digital marketing monthly packages as a whole: ask what will be done, and have it explained in plain words.

Packages usually come in 3 tiers, often called starter, growth and full service. The names mean little. Two agencies can sell a “growth” tier with very different work inside, so read the list of items, not the label.

Most agreements begin with an audit in the first 30 days, then settle into a monthly rhythm. Digital marketing monthly packages differ from a project, which ends when a defined list of fixes is done, and from a single-channel retainer, which covers only one platform. If you only need one channel, a single-channel scope is usually simpler to check.

For stage-by-stage advice aimed at local firms, see our guide to digital marketing packages for small business. This guide is about the monthly work itself.

What is included in digital marketing monthly packages?

Four kinds of lines: channel work, setup, tracking and reporting. Only the first changes a lot from month to month, so most of your comparison belongs there.

  • Channel work: the ads, pages, emails or posts made and managed that month. Ask for it as a count, such as 4 ad creatives, 2 landing page edits and 2 emails.
  • Setup: audit, account structure and first fixes. It is heavy in month 1 and should shrink after that.
  • Tracking: conversion events, a working analytics property and a check that orders or leads are counted once.
  • Reporting: the same metrics, in the same format, in the same week each month. Our sample report shows the layout we use.

A monthly SEO scope is a good example of a line that needs a count of its own; our guide to the monthly SEO package shows what that looks like quarter by quarter.

Be careful with lines that cannot be counted, such as “ongoing optimization” or “strategy support”. They are not wrong, but they cannot be checked. If a quote has 10 lines and only 3 of them name a number, the other 7 are promises of effort, not deliveries.

How many channels should one package cover? Fewer than the brochure suggests. Two channels worked every week beat five touched once a month, and digital marketing monthly packages with a short, countable list are easier to hold an agency to. Start with the channel closest to a sale, such as search ads or email to existing customers, and add a second one when the first report shows it is working.

How much do digital marketing monthly packages cost?

Three bills: the agency fee, the ad spend paid to the platform and the tools. The digital marketing monthly cost is only comparable once the three are added together.

We don’t print market ranges for digital marketing monthly packages, because they move too fast to stay true and they vary by country and scope. What matters more is what drives the fee up or down:

  1. Channels: each extra channel needs its own setup, creative and report.
  2. Volume: 4 ad creatives a month take less time than 12.
  3. Site size: a store with 2,000 product pages needs more technical care than a 15-page site.
  4. Meetings and reporting: a weekly call costs more hours than a monthly written update.

Ad spend is a separate bill. You set the budget, and it is paid to Google or Meta, not to the agency. A package fee that quietly includes ad spend makes the agency’s own share impossible to see, so ask for both numbers on the quote. Tools are the third bill: email software, call tracking, reporting dashboards and stock images are sometimes included and sometimes added on, so the digital marketing monthly cost of two quotes is only equal once you know which. Our guide to marketing agency pricing models explains retainers, percentage fees and the other ways a monthly fee is built.

Is digital marketing expensive?

It is when the fee buys little, and cheap when the same fee buys a lot. The test is cost per delivered item, not the headline figure. Divide each quote by the items it lists for a month.

Worked example of two digital marketing monthly packages compared by cost per delivered item: $300 for quote A and $150 for quote B

Worked example (two invented quotes, not market rates): Quote A is $2,400 for the month and lists 8 delivered items, so each item is $300. Quote B is $3,000 for the month and lists 20 items, so each is $150. The dearer quote is half the cost per item, which is why the lowest of any digital marketing monthly packages quotes is not always the cheapest.

This only works if the items are comparable. A one-line email is not a landing page rebuild, so give each item a rough weight, or compare only the kinds of items you care about, such as ad creatives or pages.

Watch for three traps when you run this test on digital marketing monthly packages:

  • Padding: a list of 20 items where 12 are reports, calls and logins.
  • Month 1 loading: an audit that makes month 1 look costly and months 2 to 12 look cheap, or the reverse. Compare quotes over 3 months.
  • Hidden extras: creative, landing pages or call tracking that are billed on top.

What does a digital marketing monthly plan look like?

Three stages in the first 90 days: setup and tracking, first things live, then a read of the results. A plan that skips the first stage builds on numbers nobody can trust.

Digital marketing monthly plan for the first 90 days: what the work focuses on in each month and what you can check at the end of it

Here is the timing we publish for our own ecommerce SEO work: the audit within 2 workdays, the plan and first fixes in about a week, and the first monthly report after 30 days. Whoever you hire, ask for a timeline that specific. A digital marketing monthly plan with no dates is a list of intentions.

In a sound digital marketing monthly plan, by day 30 you should hold a ranked problem list, a dated fix log and working tracking. By day 60 the first ads, pages or emails should be live, with a count of items shipped against the quote’s list. By day 90 the report should show cost per result by channel, and the agency should suggest what to cut.

Read the report against the same weeks last year as well as last month. Google’s guide to debugging traffic drops tells you to set Search Console’s Performance report to the last 16 months, so that a seasonal pattern is not mistaken for a result or a failure.

What is a digital marketing retainer?

A fee paid every month for access to an agency’s time and a defined scope of work. In digital marketing monthly packages, the retainer is the contract part: term, notice, and who owns what when it ends.

Digital marketing retainer checklist: ad accounts, analytics, search console, content and handover all kept in the client's name

Ownership is the term people forget, and it has a 30-day tail: most notice periods run that long, so settle it on day 1. Google’s help page on manager accounts says a manager account can be given ownership of a client account, and that users with administrative access can unlink from the manager at any time. So keep your ad account in your own name and link the agency, not the other way round.

Analytics works the same way. In Analytics roles, an Administrator can manage users and an Editor cannot. Make yourself the Administrator and give the agency Editor or Marketer access, so it can do the work but cannot lock you out.

Search Console follows the same logic. Google’s owner guide says a property must have at least 1 verified owner, and that a verified owner is added or removed by adding or removing a token on the site. If the agency verified your site with its own token, taking that token off is part of the handover.

Also ask, in writing:

  • Do all pages, images and ad creative made for you belong to you if you leave in month 2?
  • Is there a minimum term, a notice period, and is the last month billed in full?
  • Is the fix log handed over at the end?

The six traps in this guide, in one list:

  1. Buying the tier name instead of the item list.
  2. Ad spend hidden inside the fee.
  3. Items that cannot be counted.
  4. A month 1 that is all setup, with no dates.
  5. Accounts opened in the agency’s name.
  6. A notice period or minimum term you found after signing.

FAQ

Questions we get.

Can’t find yours? Ask on WhatsApp or by email and we’ll answer it.

Is ad spend included in digital marketing monthly packages?

Usually not. The fee pays for the agency's work and the ad spend is paid to the platform. Ask for both figures on the quote, and for the ad budget to be set by you, in your own ad account.

Can I buy a package month to month?

Some agencies offer it and some ask for a minimum term. Ask before you sign, and get the notice period and the handover of accounts in writing.

How many channels should a package cover?

Fewer than the brochure suggests. Two channels done weekly beat five touched once a month. Start with the channel closest to a sale and add another when its report shows results.

What should the first month deliver?

An audit, a written plan, working tracking and the first fixes. Results from ads or search take longer, so the first report is mainly proof of setup.
