How to rank in ChatGPT search: the four gates a page must pass, in order

ChatGPT search has no rank list to climb, so ranking means being cited. This guide gives the four gates in order, the crawler and discovery checks behind them, a logged-out test and a one-week checklist.

How to rank in ChatGPT search comes down to being cited, because it shows linked answers rather than a numbered list. A page gets cited by passing four gates in order: allowed, found, matched and cited.

This guide takes the gates one at a time, shows what a robots.txt mistake looks like, explains how Bing fits in, and ends with a logged-out test that does not depend on your own account. It is written for store owners, so the examples use an invented cookware shop.

How to rank in ChatGPT search: what does ranking mean?

You earn a citation, not a position. OpenAI says ChatGPT search answers with current information and links to sources, and its Sources button opens the cited pages.

How to rank in ChatGPT search in four gates: allowed, found, matched and cited, checked in that order

Each gate depends on the one before it, and how to rank in ChatGPT search is mostly a matter of finding the first one that is shut. A page that is blocked cannot be found, a page that is not found cannot be matched to a question, and a page that is not matched cannot be cited. That is why the order matters more than any single tip.

Nobody outside OpenAI can promise a result here. OpenAI also warns that results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, so treat the four gates as work you control, not a ranking formula. A fix you make today can take about 24 hours to show, as OpenAI notes for its search crawler, and a new page may take longer to be found.

The practical consequence is that how to rank in ChatGPT search is a checking job before it is a writing job. Most stores we look at need a closed gate opened, not a new article.

How does ChatGPT search work?

It reads the question, rewrites it into search queries, reads what comes back and writes an answer with links. According to OpenAI’s Help Center, it typically rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries and sends them to search providers.

Three details from that page change how you test. If you edited robots.txt less than 24 hours ago, wait before testing, because OpenAI says its systems need about that long to adjust.

  • It can search by itself. ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information.
  • It is widely available. Web search is listed for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and people who are not signed in can use it too, so your customers do not need a paid plan.
  • Memory can shape the query. If memory is on, ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a search query, so two people can get different answers.

The same page names Microsoft and Shopify privacy policies for search providers. OpenAI’s announcement of ChatGPT search adds that any website can choose to appear in it.

Can ChatGPT’s search crawler read your site?

Only if robots.txt lets OAI-SearchBot in. OpenAI’s crawler overview says sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.

OpenAI recommends allowing the crawler and its published IP ranges, and says search can take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt update. Our OAI-SearchBot glossary entry has the definition.

Here is a worked example for an invented store that sells cast-iron cookware. Its robots.txt has two groups, and they do opposite things:

  • User-agent: GPTBot followed by Disallow: / asks OpenAI not to use the site for training. It does not remove the store from search.
  • User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Disallow: / removes the store from ChatGPT search answers within about 24 hours.

OpenAI says each setting is independent, so a store can allow search and still opt out of training. Our GPTBot entry explains the training side.

Also check the live file, not your template. A firewall or an app can add lines you did not write. On our own ChatGPT visibility page, “OAI-SearchBot blocked” is the first problem we list among those we see most often.

Of all the steps in how to rank in ChatGPT search, this is the fastest to check and the one that does the most damage when it is wrong.

One more agent matters. OpenAI says ChatGPT-User visits start from a person’s request, so robots.txt rules may not apply, and it is not used to decide whether content appears in Search.

Does ChatGPT search use Google or Bing?

OpenAI does not say which provider answers which query, so do not assume either. Its Help Center names Microsoft among the search providers, and does not name Google, so make sure Bing can find your pages as well as Google.

Your ChatGPT search results can therefore differ from your Google results, and both are worth checking. That is an inference, not a proven route. It is cheap to act on, though, because Bing’s webmaster guidelines list 4 ways to make URLs discoverable: IndexNow submission, XML sitemaps, crawlable internal links and external links from relevant sites.

The same guidelines give three rules worth checking this week:

  1. Sitemaps list canonical URLs only, with accurate lastmod values, and remove deleted or redirected URLs promptly.
  2. Permanent moves use a 301 redirect. A 302 is for changes of less than 2 days.
  3. Duplicate URLs dilute signals, so each page needs one canonical address.

IndexNow lets you tell participating search engines when a URL is added, updated or deleted. Its documentation allows up to 10,000 URLs in one POST request, and a key of 8 to 128 characters. Bing adds that sitemaps do not promise visibility.

How do you get ChatGPT to cite your pages?

Make one page the plain answer to one question, and open with that answer. Pages that are discoverable, accurate, well structured and written for people are the ones Bing’s guidelines say perform best across search experiences, and the same habit helps a model quote you correctly.

Work through these steps for each page you want cited:

  1. Pick the single buyer question the page answers, in the words a buyer would type.
  2. Put the answer in the first two sentences, with the number or fact that makes it checkable.
  3. Add one table, list or short worked example below it, so there is something to quote.
  4. Link the source of every figure in the same paragraph, and date anything that changes.
  5. Keep one URL for the topic, so signals are not split across copies.

For the invented cookware store, a good opening for its skillet page is: “Our 10-inch skillet works on gas, electric and induction hobs.” That is 10 words, and it answers the question before it sells anything. A page that opens with a 60-word brand story gives a model nothing short to quote.

How to appear in ChatGPT for a given question is, in the end, a page-level job. This is the same job that our guide to AEO vs GEO calls answer engine work, and it also helps the page in Google. Pages on your own site are only half of how to rank in ChatGPT search: being named on other sites helps too, but that is a separate, slower job.

How do you test your ChatGPT search results?

To check your ChatGPT search results, ask five buyer questions in a logged-out window, open the Sources list each time and log what you see. Logged out matters because saved memories can change how a query is rewritten.

Use questions a buyer would ask before choosing a store, since that is where ChatGPT search results decide who gets named, such as “best cast-iron skillet for a glass stove”, not your brand name. A brand-name question tests navigation, not matching.

Record four things from the ChatGPT search results for each question: the date, the exact wording, whether your page was cited, and which pages were cited instead. Then do the arithmetic. In an invented example, a store is cited on 3 of 5 questions, which is 60%. The 2 misses point to pages whose openings do not answer the question.

ChatGPT search results troubleshooting table: symptom, what to check and what to fix for each of the four gates

Look at the pages that are cited instead of yours: the ChatGPT search results often favor a page that states the answer in its first lines. Repeat the test on two other days before you change anything, because answers vary. Treat the 60% as a baseline for your own site, not a benchmark. Compare it with the same five questions a month later. If you want to know how to appear in ChatGPT more often, this log tells you which gate to work on, because each miss points at one.

How to appear in ChatGPT: what should you do first this week?

Start at gate 1 and move one gate a day. For anyone asking how to appear in ChatGPT without a big budget, this is the whole plan. Most of the value in how to rank in ChatGPT search sits in the first three days, because a closed gate blocks everything after it.

One-week checklist to appear in ChatGPT search: robots.txt, sitemap, IndexNow, answer-first pages and the logged-out test

Teams that ask how to rank in ChatGPT search often skip days 1 to 3 and jump to writing, which is why the order is fixed. If days 1 to 3 turn up problems you cannot fix yourself, such as a firewall rule or a sitemap plugin, send the list to your developer exactly as written. If you want a second pair of eyes, our free audit checks the crawler, the sitemap and your product pages, and our AI search optimization service covers the ongoing work.

FAQ

Questions we get.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

No. OpenAI treats its bots independently: GPTBot is about training, and OAI-SearchBot is about search. A site can block the first and allow the second. Check that no broad rule or firewall setting blocks both.

How long after a robots.txt change will ChatGPT search notice?

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust. Check again after a day before you change anything else.

Does robots.txt control ChatGPT-User visits?

Not reliably. OpenAI says ChatGPT-User visits are started by people, so robots.txt rules may not apply, and that agent is not used to decide whether content appears in Search. Use OAI-SearchBot rules for search.

Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan to see what my customers see?

No. OpenAI lists web search on its Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and says people who are not signed in can use it too. A logged-out window is the cleanest place to test.
