Shopify Catalog is Shopify's structured database of product information from eligible products sold by Shopify stores. Shop, AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Gemini, and AI agents use it to search, compare and recommend products, and eligible products are included automatically, with no app to install.
Shopify Catalog is Shopify’s structured database of product information, built from eligible products sold by Shopify stores. Shop, AI platforms and AI agents use it to search, compare and recommend products, and eligible products are included automatically.
What does Shopify Catalog do?
It hands your product data to AI shopping channels in one structured format. Shopify calls it “a structured source of product information gathered from eligible products that are sold by stores on Shopify”, read by Shop, select AI platforms, shopping sites and AI agents for titles, descriptions, images, prices, options and availability (Shopify Help Center).
It’s also what an agent searches when it talks to a Shopify store through the Universal Commerce Protocol. All 18 store profiles we fetched on 17 October 2026 declared Shopify’s own catalog capability, dev.shopify.catalog, on top of the standard catalog search and lookup.
Being in the Catalog isn’t the same as being shown. Shopify says “each channel controls the final ranking, wording, and shopping experience”.
Which products are eligible?
Products with a title, at least 1 image and a price above 0, published with a product URL on an eligible store. As of October 2026, the requirements page lists 11 store and product rules: products “must have a price greater than 0”, can’t be unlisted or hidden from search engines, and the store must be on the Starter plan or higher, without a password page.

Catalog eligibility also depends on account standing: genuine sales history, prompt fulfilment, a low chargeback rate and invoices paid on time. Shopify reviews that standing over time, so a new store can become eligible later, and an established one can lose eligibility. If a store doesn’t qualify, the reason shows under Sales channels > Agentic > Sources in the Shopify admin.
What did 3,635 real products show?
That the hard rules are rarely the problem. On 18 October 2026 we checked the newest 250 products in the public feeds of 16 Shopify stores, 3,635 products in all: 149 (4.1%) had no image or no variant priced above 0, so they’d be left out.

The bigger gap is the product data for AI channels that Shopify’s optimization guide asks for. 857 products (24%) had an empty description field, and 285 had no product type. One caution: a store may keep descriptions in metafields, which our check can’t see.

Can you opt out of Shopify Catalog?
No, only out of individual channels. Shopify says “You can’t opt out of Shopify Catalog itself”, but you can stop a specific agentic storefront, such as one AI platform, from reading your products; they stay in the Catalog for Shop and storefront search.
- Check the Catalog status and any ineligibility reason under Sales channels > Agentic.
- Fix images and prices on the products that break a rule.
- Fill descriptions, product types and real option names, the fields Shopify lists for AI platforms. In our check, 857 of the 3,635 products had no description in the product field.
Our AI shopping channels service handles the channel settings, the AI commerce readiness check finds the data gaps product by product, and the AI for e-commerce hub covers the rest.
